How Music Can Change Our Mood
Have you ever been sad and suddenly become happy because you started listening to some music? It probably has happened to you, and this is because music has the power to change our mood.
There is scientific evidence that music can change our mood and bring us joy, happiness and sadness depending on the type of music we are listening to.
There are many different kinds of music that affect our mood in different ways. Depending on the song and the rhythm. But have you ever thought, why?
When you listen to a song this causes the release of serotonin, a monoamine neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being and happiness. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain releases neurons (nerve cells) that when processed, tells the brain you feel good.
The brain is a complex organ and when we listen to music, it is processed in many different areas of our brain. For example; the ‘nucleus accumbens’ and the ‘amygdala’ processes the emotional reactions to music. The ‘auditory cortex’ processes the first stages of listening to sounds and the perception and analysis of tones, whilst the ‘hippocampus’ allows us to memorise the music, musical experiences and contexts.

Think about classical music for example; the beautiful Moonlight Sonata of Beethoven. It has the power to calm and relax a person. It is believed that classical music can help you to sleep much better, reduces tension and increase concentration. Many students listen to classical music whilst studying and many pregnant women play it to their children with the belief that as it stimulates their childs brain, their child will be more intelligent for it.

Latino music is a great way of increasing adrenaline and boosting energy and spirit so do not hesitate to get up and dance, a workout as fun as latino dancing will have you feeling great all day long!
And for those of us that are in love, listening to love songs boosts our serotonin levels leaving us yearning to be with our partners and loved ones. Although, you should avoid them after a heart break, try something happier… or ice cream.
